WhatsApp voice notes and photos to text: tools compared

Compare ways to turn WhatsApp voice notes and photos into text: Echo MSG, built-in transcripts, Live Text, Google Lens and desktop audio tools.

The quick answer

For voice notes, compare WhatsApp’s built-in transcripts, Echo MSG and local audio tools. For photos and screenshots, compare Echo MSG, Apple Live Text and Google Lens. Echo MSG returns copyable text from either input in its WhatsApp chat; longer voice notes can also receive summaries. Choose by input, where you want the result and privacy needs.

How we compared the options

This guide is written by the Echo MSG team, and includes our own service. We reviewed the voice-tool and photo-tool pages on 4 October 2026. We compare where the text appears, how you provide the audio or image, and what each provider says about its workflow. We have not run a controlled accuracy or speed benchmark across these products.

“Best” depends on the job. Reading a voice note, copying a photographed address and recovering words from a screenshot are different needs. Start with the input you have, then choose where you want the text. These are examples of available workflows, not an exhaustive list or a ranked leaderboard.

Voice notes: compare five transcription workflows

Product information checked on 4 October 2026; confirm current details before choosing.
Option and sourceHow you use itWhere the audio is processedMain consideration
WhatsApp’s transcript guideEnable transcripts on a supported phone, then transcribe a note in place. On your device, according to WhatsApp.This voice-note feature does not extract text from photos. Check your device’s supported languages and copy controls.
Echo MSGForward a note and receive copyable text in the Echo MSG chat; longer notes can receive summaries and action highlights.Cloud processing through Echo MSG’s providers. Also send photos or screenshots containing text to the same chat for a copyable reply. No separate app; usage limits and paid options apply.
AbrègeForward a WhatsApp note for a summary and a transcript.Server-side, according to Abrège.Its linked product page describes audio, with no photo-to-text workflow listed. Check current image support with Abrège if you need it.
Reply WizardUse an extension’s transcription control inside WhatsApp Web on a computer. Its on-device Whisper mode runs locally; provider-key and paid-plan modes send audio to cloud services. Its linked voice-to-text page describes audio, with no photo text extraction listed. Check the processing mode; this feature needs a browser extension.
DropVoxExport the audio and open it in the local Mac app.Locally, according to DropVox.Its listed inputs are audio files, with no photo-to-text workflow described. It requires a separate app and model setup.

Photo-to-text is an important difference here: Echo MSG documents it alongside voice transcription in the same WhatsApp chat. “Not listed” describes the linked product pages, rather than proving another service can never process an image.

Photos and screenshots: compare text-extraction tools

Photo-to-text reads visible writing in an image. It is a separate task from recognising speech, so an audio transcription tool is not automatically an image-text tool. Echo MSG supports both workflows in the same WhatsApp conversation.

Three ways to get copyable text from a photo or screenshot
Option and sourceHow you use itWhere you get the textWhat to check
Echo MSGSend or forward an image containing text to the Echo MSG WhatsApp chat.A text reply you can copy from WhatsApp.Images are sent to a cloud text-recognition provider. Account allowances and image quality affect the result.
Apple’s Live Text guideOpen the image in Photos on a supported iPhone or iPad and select recognised text.Copy the selection and paste it into another app.Check device, software and language support. This workflow does not send the image to Echo MSG.
Google’s Lens guideOpen the photo in Google Photos, use Lens and select the words.Copy recognised text into the destination you choose.Review Google’s current controls, availability and data settings. It is a separate workflow from a WhatsApp text reply.

The Apple and Google rows describe their documented text-selection workflows. We have not benchmarked these tools against each other, and do not assume the same device support or privacy behaviour across them.

Choose for photos and screenshots

If a notice or screenshot is already in WhatsApp and you want its words returned as a message, send the image to Echo MSG. Read and check the text reply, then copy it into a document, email or new message. The photo-to-text guide walks through the steps.

If the picture is already in your photo library, Live Text on a supported Apple device or Google Lens may be a convenient starting point. Try the copy action on the image you actually need to use. Echo MSG is another route when a separate WhatsApp reply fits your routine.

For a screenshot, use the original selectable text if you still have it. Otherwise, send a readable image and check the extracted words against it. Our screenshot guide explains cropping, copying and keeping the context.

Photo text needs its own accuracy check. Look for missing lines, confused numbers and columns read in the wrong order. Echo MSG returns recognised text; do not assume the reply recreates a table, translates a document or summarises a photo. Improve the input with these image-quality tips.

Choose for phone or computer

If you mostly receive notes on your phone, first look for WhatsApp’s transcript setting. A forwarding service is another option when you want the result as a separate message. With Echo MSG, start a chat, forward the audio and read its reply. See the step-by-step transcription guide.

On a computer, decide whether you want a control inside WhatsApp Web, a separate WhatsApp conversation, or a file you open in another app. These choices change the number of steps and where you can find the result later. Echo MSG works through its chat in your linked session; it does not add a button beneath notes in other conversations.

Choose for copying or summaries

A readable transcript is not always a reusable text message. If your aim is to paste a delivery address into a document, test the actual copy action before choosing a workflow. Echo MSG sends an ordinary text reply that you can copy; our copying guide walks through it.

For longer updates, check whether you need the full wording, a short overview, or both. Echo MSG can add summaries and action highlights to longer notes. A summary can omit qualifications, so keep the original recording while checking a commitment, amount or deadline. See our summary example for how to use the result.

Check privacy and cost

Sending audio or an image shares that content with another service. Echo MSG uses cloud processing for voice notes and OCR.space for photo text: read its Privacy Policy before sending confidential content. A claim that a provider does not retain audio is different from a claim that audio never leaves your device.

Compare the unit being charged as well as the headline price: audio minutes, image conversions, file limits and subscription periods can differ. Check current product pages and the offer in your Echo MSG chat. We have not listed prices as if every free allowance or checkout offer were the same for every account.

Test a voice note and a photo

  1. Choose one voice note and one photo you are allowed to share, resembling the messages you normally receive.
  2. For the voice note, check a name, a number and a request against the recording. For longer notes, check any summary against the full meaning.
  3. For the photo, check a name, a number and the reading order against the image. Look for missing lines or mixed-up columns.
  4. Copy each result into the tool where you actually need it, and check how much editing remains.
  5. Confirm the allowance and processing arrangements for each input before making it a regular habit.

If a separate text reply in WhatsApp fits your workflow, try Echo MSG. If processing must stay on the device, choose a suitable local option and verify its settings.

Common questions

What is the best WhatsApp transcription tool?

There is no single best choice for every workflow. WhatsApp’s own feature is a useful starting point for reading notes. Echo MSG returns copyable text in a separate chat. An on-device tool is a better fit when audio must stay on your device. This is an Echo MSG comparison, not an independent ranking or accuracy benchmark.

Can a WhatsApp bot transcribe every voice note automatically?

Echo MSG starts processing after you send or forward a note to its chat. It does not monitor other conversations. Fully automatic processing of incoming business messages requires a separate integration and appropriate permissions.

Do I need to install an app to use Echo MSG?

No separate Echo MSG app is required. Start its WhatsApp chat and forward a voice note or send a photo containing text. Your normal WhatsApp app or linked session remains the place where you receive the result.
