Photo to text

How to turn WhatsApp photos into text

Extract copyable text from WhatsApp photos with Echo MSG, or use Apple Live Text and Google Lens. Compare the steps, image quality and privacy.

The quick answer

Send a clear photo containing text to Echo MSG on WhatsApp and it replies with the words it can read. You can copy that reply into a message or document. On a supported phone, Apple Live Text or Google Lens can also extract text from a saved photo. Choose the workflow that fits where you want the result.

Choose how to extract the text

A photo of a notice, a menu or a printed set of instructions can be easy to read but awkward to reuse. Photo-to-text conversion recognises the writing inside the image and turns it into text you can select. This is often called optical character recognition, or OCR.

Echo MSG brings that result back to WhatsApp. Your phone may already have another useful route: Apple Live Text or Google Lens. This guide is written by the Echo MSG team and includes our service; the alternatives below are based on their official guides, not an accuracy contest.

Three ways to get copyable text from a photo or screenshot
Option and sourceHow you use itWhere you get the textWhat to check
Echo MSGSend or forward an image containing text to the Echo MSG WhatsApp chat.A text reply you can copy from WhatsApp.Images are sent to a cloud text-recognition provider. Account allowances and image quality affect the result.
Apple’s Live Text guideOpen the image in Photos on a supported iPhone or iPad and select recognised text.Copy the selection and paste it into another app.Check device, software and language support. This workflow does not send the image to Echo MSG.
Google’s Lens guideOpen the photo in Google Photos, use Lens and select the words.Copy recognised text into the destination you choose.Review Google’s current controls, availability and data settings. It is a separate workflow from a WhatsApp text reply.

Choose based on where the image is and where you need the words. For a photo already in a WhatsApp conversation, sending it to Echo MSG keeps the result in a chat. For an image already in your photo library, your phone’s text-selection tools may be convenient.

Get photo text inside WhatsApp

  1. Start a WhatsApp chat with Echo MSG and check the allowance or plan shown there.
  2. Choose a clear image containing the words you need. Send it as a photo, or forward the existing image to Echo MSG. You do not need to record a voice note.
  3. Read the extracted text in Echo MSG’s reply. It appears in that conversation, separate from the original image’s chat.
  4. Compare important details with the photo. Check spelling, quantities, punctuation and whether all lines were included.
  5. Copy the text reply into a new message, notes app or document. If the result arrives in several messages, copy each part in order.

This workflow extracts visible writing; it does not promise a description of everything in the picture. A photo without readable words may produce a “no readable text” response. Send an image for text extraction, rather than assuming a PDF attachment or another file type follows the same route.

For a picture of an app or message, see how to copy text from a WhatsApp screenshot.

Use Live Text or Google Lens

On a supported iPhone or iPad, open the picture in Photos. Use Live Text to select the words, then copy them into your destination. Check Apple’s Live Text guide for your device and language requirements.

In Google Photos, open the picture and choose Lens. Select the recognised words and use the available copy control. Google’s Lens guide explains the current steps; controls can differ by device and version.

You do not need to use every method. Try the route already available to you, and compare the result against your own image. For a broader look at both audio and images, read our voice-note and photo-to-text comparison.

Example: a printed notice

This is a made-up example to illustrate the workflow, not a customer image or a measured output.

What you can do with the reply

Copy the event details into a message or your notes after checking the date, time and wording against the notice.

Extracting these lines does not create a calendar event or confirm that the event is still happening. The image is the source for the text; you still decide what to do with it.

Understand processing and limits

Echo MSG sends images to OCR.space for text recognition. This is cloud processing. Echo MSG does not store a content archive of images or extracted text in its own database after delivery; account and usage details are retained to run the service. Provider practices and the returned WhatsApp messages are separate considerations. Read the Privacy Policy before sending confidential material.

Small letters, glare, blur, handwriting and complicated layouts can all affect the output. Text may be incomplete or appear in a different order. Use the photo-to-text troubleshooting guide to improve the input and review the result.

Echo MSG also turns voice notes into text. Those are two separate inputs with the same practical aim: getting words you can read and reuse inside WhatsApp.

Common questions

Can Echo MSG turn a photo into copyable text?

Yes. Send an image containing readable text to Echo MSG and it returns the extracted words in its WhatsApp chat. Check them against the image before copying or sharing.

Is photo-to-text the same as voice note transcription?

Both return text, but they read different inputs. Voice transcription recognises spoken words; photo-to-text recognises visible writing, often called optical character recognition or OCR. Send an image for the photo workflow and audio for the voice workflow.

Can I use photo-to-text without installing another app?

Echo MSG works in your existing WhatsApp chat. It uses cloud processing, and current account allowances apply. Check the offer shown in the conversation.

Will it preserve the document layout or translate the image?

The image workflow returns recognised text. Do not assume it will reproduce a table, create an editable PDF or translate the result. Review reading order and formatting yourself.
